Cinderella

 Cinderella

a comparison between two tales

If we think about princesses, Cinderella has got to be one of them. This popular fairytale was released in 1950, since then, multiple versions have been made and played on the big screen. But, as popular as it is, a lot of people doesn't seem to like how unrealistic the plot is, regardless of the fact that it is called a FAIRY TALE. There are people out there who created their own versions of "Cinderella" by adding a few realistic aspects.

In this blog, I'm going to be comparing two other versions of "Cinderella" by using a venn diagram. On the left side is the "Cinderella" version of Anne Sexton, while on the right is by Roald Dahl.

Both authors' clearly has a different approach of how they want Cinderella to be depicted as. Anne Sexton actually retained the characters' personality, for instance, Cinderella still being the naive and gullible girl that she is, the evil stepsisters, and the knight-in-shining-armor Prince Charming. But, what Anne Sexton did change was the plot, she made it more dark and added a few bloody feature to it. Laxmi (2021)  expressed in an analysis that Anne Sexton's Cinderella Story was trying to show the reader that happily-ever-after does not even exist in reality. The point is actually relevant, no matter how joyful people look on the outside, a different story may be happening on the inside. Moving on to Roald Dahl's version, his take on "Cinderella" is actually very humorous. Roald Dahl totally changed the personality of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Roald Dahl's version was more different from the original, apart from the fact that the fairy godmother still helped Cinderella prepare for the ball, regardless, his version was very innovative. To summarize, Cinderella won't be Cinderella without her leaving the shoe behind, being followed by Prince Charming, and having a fairy or a flying-being help her prepare for the ball.
